I have been showing excerpts of this book to people for three years now, with great comic effect. ("I WANT TO DO MATH LIKE BRICKS DO MATH" has become a family mantra of sorts.) Nobody, not one single person, has ever been able to make even a tiny bit of sense of any of these so-called "poems," which read as if vomited out by a mechanical word-generator. They're a meaningless, pointless aggregation of images that seem to be making fun of the reader in some way. ("The only reason you don't get it is because I'm so much smarter than you! HAHAHAHA")Professor Tanta: Sorry, but your poetry sucks and you're not wearing ANY clothes. But thanks for the laughs.

Unusual Woods is a great introduction to Gene Tanta's poetry, which subverts preconceptions, and reveals many interesting metaphorical harbors and hollows. Anyone interested in the possibilities of a new kind of poetry will love this engaging book.
Part tone poems, part arias of garbled phraseology, Tanta's poems are hyper real he captures both the dog and the tail that wags it. The regularity of form creates a baseline that Tanta plays with and uses to help explore exceedingly complicated topics. Indeed, the form itself becomes one of Tanta's hyper realities. Most importantly, however, Tanta treats his subjects thoughtfully and humanely, without degrading them or reducing their complexity. I suspect that language is, for Tanta, a bit like the ocean separating Europe from North America, and these 13-line "ghost sonnets" are the planks of a shipwreck he's assembled into a makeshift surfboard, which he uses to ride the waves. We should consider ourselves lucky that we can come along for the ride.
I found UNUSUAL WOODS by Gene Tanta utterly brilliant, enthusiastically so! I read with intrigue and appreciation Tanta's opening critical analysis of his work, especially in regards to the significance of cultural biography and its affect on aesthetic innovation. Having come to America from Romania, bringing with him all of the other landscapes, experiences, and memories of that life, this essay is a perfect preface to his poems, which are rich with fresh language and jaw-dropping-amazing images and scenes.
The 13-line form for each poem keeps his poetics clean, engrossing, and at times explosive. His narrator exudes raw emotion, instinct, passion, and a vulnerability at coming to terms with the past and this new life. UNUSUAL WOODS is as much about finding one's wedge in the world as it is about discovering life, identity, and connections/relations. Many, many times, I was blown away by the images and language-- how they hit me upon first readings, and how they lingered long after I set the collection aside.
UNUSUAL WOODS ranks as one of my favorite collections. It is one of the finest achievements I've had the opportunity to read this year.
